Despite its endearing features, the original layout was 'dysfunctional.' The best views were upstairs, so the kitchen would eventually be transferred from downstairs to the upper level.
The site access is shared drive that is narrow and steep, all materials had to be delivered on utes and trailers. The house had previously been altered and was not compliant and had no indoor out door flow.
To keep the integrity of the house we had to repurpose materials including the large ceiling panels and beams removed from other areas of the house. The house was dysfunctional with no flow and no indoor outdoor living space, the views and mature section on this property with the Nelson climate made this a priority of the design.
The house was reconfigured to maximise the views from the living areas that were once bedrooms and to create a large open living space that flowed over decking to the garden at the height of the second level whilst retaining the character and charm of the home.
